FROM “FOR THE POOR” TO FOR SALE!

Continued revelations from UDP Crony Snaps Up Prime Belizean Beachfront for Just $1,000

A property once promoted as a community empowerment hub is now making waves for a very different reason: it’s listed for a staggering $11 million BZD!

What’s shocking? The land was originally transferred in 2016 for just $25,428 BZD; and it was supposed to help the poor.

The buyer? A group called “Housing for the Poor.” But get this: it’s not registered as an NGO, despite its name suggesting a noble mission.

📜 THE PAPER TRAIL

The deal came through under the watch of then-Minister Anthony “Boots” Martinez, who signed off on the transfer while serving in the Ministry of Natural Resources. The land, 13.27 acres with 417 feet of pristine seafront, was hailed as a future site for sewing centers and computer labs.

That was the promise back in 2009. Fast forward to today – and not a single public facility has appeared. Instead, the land is now listed as a commercial real estate opportunity for millions.

🎙️ WHAT BARROW SAID

Then-Prime Minister Dean Barrow addressed the situation in a 2009 interview. While defending the project’s concept, he made it clear the group wasn’t a traditional NGO:

“I think when he said that the group is a for-profit organization, when we questioned him; our understanding was that the profits that the group makes are ploughed back into the community.”

So where’s the benefit to the community now?

🤐 SILENCE FROM “BOOTS”

When asked about the land’s high-priced listing, Martinez didn’t explain. Instead, he told reporters to “go and do the research.”

The land remains undeveloped, and public skepticism is growing. With no community center in sight, critics are asking: was this ever really about housing the poor?

🚨 THE QUESTIONS PILING UP

  • Why is the land listed at $11 million?
  • What happened to the community development plan?
  • Who really stands to gain?

So far, there’s no investigation, but the headlines – and the public – won’t stop asking: Was land meant for the poor flipped for profit?

Stay with us as this scandal unfolds – and the pressure mounts for answers, accountability, and maybe… arrests?
